Trans Youth NL traces its origins to June 2014, when Parents of Gender Creative Kids NL was founded with a meeting of six families in the community room of a grocery store. PGCK-NL included a virtual and in-person peer support group for parents in the St. John's area. In 2015, at the request of families, we added a Trans Youth Group for 12-17 year-olds to our St. John's meetings. This was soon followed by a Gender Creative Kids Playgroup for 3 to 11 year-olds and their siblings.
In 2016, we partnered with Echo Pond Summer Camp to create Camp Rainbow, the first summer camp in the province for trans, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse children. We also expanded across the province to include in-person support groups for trans youth and families in Grand Falls-Windsor and Corner Brook. I
n 2017, we co-founded Trans Support NL, combining our parent, youth, children's groups with a peer support group for trans adults. This collaboration ran until 2023.
Today, Trans Youth NL Inc. is run as an independent non-profit organization focused directly on supporting trans, Two-Spirit, and non-binary kids and their families throughout the province. Our Board of Directors is comprised of our group facilitators from across the province, and is trans majority-run.
As our groups have grown, we have partnered with a number of organizations who have generously provided us with meeting space, including the A.C. Hunter Library, the Janeway Resource Centre, and our friends at Coastal Health. As of 2024, we now meet at the spacious First Light Childcare Centre in St. John's. In Grand Falls-Windsor, our space has been provided by Status of Women Central, and in Corner Brook, by Memorial University's Grenfell Campus. In Happy Valley-Goose Bay, the Labrador Friendship Centre provides us with space at their building at 49 Grenfell Street.
Our beautiful original logo was designed in 2016 by Graham Blair and updated with our new name in 2023 by Amy Adams. Our logo was most recently redesigned by Charlie Dunphy in 2026, with our new website also designed in 2026 by Rónán Martel!
Trans Youth NL Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization, and we depend on your donations to run our peer support groups!
We are committed to transparency and efficient use of our funds, and even a small donation makes a big difference! We pay honoraria to our trans facilitators, and our parent facilitators offer their services as volunteers.
