We were founded in June 2014 as Parents of Gender Creative Kids NL, a peer support group for parents available as a Facebook group anywhere in the province and through monthly in-person meetings.
In 2015, at the request of families, we added a Trans Youth Group for 12-17 year-olds to our St. John's meetings. This was soon followed by a Gender Creative Kids Playgroup for 3 to 11 year-olds and their siblings. In 2016, we partnered with Echo Pond Summer Camp to create Camp Rainbow, the first summer camp in the province for trans, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse children. We also expanded across the province to include in-person support groups for trans youth and families in Grand Falls-Windsor and Corner Brook. In 2017, we co-founded Trans Support NL. Since 2023, Trans Youth NL Inc. has run as our own non-profit organization, with our own Board of Directors, allowing us to target our fundraising initiatives to directly benefit trans kids and their families.
Our in-person meetings in St. John's began in the community rooms of grocery stores, and later as our groups grew, we moved to the library, the Janeway Resource Centre, and then to Coastal Health. As of 2024, we now meet at the spacious First Light Childcare Centre on Elizabeth Avenue. In Grand Falls-Windsor, our space has been provided by Status of Women Central, and in Corner Brook, by Memorial University's Grenfell Campus. In Happy Valley - Goose Bay, the Labrador Friendship Centre provides us with space at their building at 49 Grenfell Street.
